The incident occurred as gardaí and the Road Safety Authority issued a joint appeal to all road users to take greater care this summer.

They said the summer months are typically high risk periods due to a number of factors including more people travelling and more children, agricultural vehicles, cyclists and motorcyclists sharing the roads.

There have been 76 road fatalities so far this year, 11 fewer than on the same date last year. More than half of all fatalities (52 per cent) have occurred on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Moyagh Murdock, chief executive of the Road Safety Authority, said there was a spike in pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist casualties over the summer months.

“ As drivers we need to be on the lookout for them. Worryingly 10 cyclists have lost their lives to date on the road compared to four to the date last year.”
