Mother of Marty Morrissey dies in Co Clare road crash

A woman in her 90s who died following a Co Clare crash on Tuesday has been named locally as Peggy Morrissey (nee Twomey), the mother of broadcaster Marty Morrissey.

A close friend of the RTE broadcaster, said the wider Quilty community will comfort and rally around him .

Former chairman of Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA club, Michael Talty said on Tuesday : “Peggy was held in very high esteem in this community. She was a lady you could not keep down. She was a ball of energy.”

The single-vehicle crash took place at Annagh, Miltown Malbay, Co Clare at about 12.30am on Tuesday.

Mr Talty said: “Peggy was everyone’s friend - she had a great capability of communicating with young and old.”

Mr Talty said: “Marty was her superstar - as simple as that. She doted out of Marty and he doted out of her - they had a lovely relationship.”

He added: “ Marty is an only child. Peggy had a total loyalty to Marty and he to her.”

Mr Talty said that Peggy’s religion and Marty “were the two big things in her life”

Mrs Morrissey used to attend mass every morning at Mullagh Church and came back at evening time to say her Rosary. Its Sacristan, Anne Hassett said on Tuesday night: “I was very fond of her. Marty was very good to his mother.” She added: “Everyone here is in shock. ”

Marty Morrissey has often spoken publicly of the bond between himself and his mother. The Quilty man’s father died on December 19th 2004.

On Tuesday, Gardai appealed to any road users who were travelling on the road where the accident occurred to make available any camera footage to the Garda
