Boy (15) accused of possessing stolen jewellery refused bail

A teenage boy, who is charged with possessing jewellery which was allegedly stolen during a burglary at the home of a 90-year-old woman, has been refused bail.

The boy, 15, who made no reply when he was charged, appeared at Dublin Children’s Court.

Gardaí have objected to bail due to the seriousness of the case. Judge John Coughlan remanded him in custody to appear again next Friday.

The boy was accompanied to court by social workers, his solicitor and a lawyer for the Child and Family Agency.

The teen, who cannot be named because he is a juvenile, is charged under the Theft and Fraud Act. He is accused of possessing a ladies watch, a half-eternity ring with flat diamond on a gold band and a full gold eternity ring as well as a four stone diamond ring.

It is alleged the jewellery was found at the boy’s home address in south Co. Dublin on Monday.

Directions from the DPP need to be obtained. An outline of the facts has not yet been given to determine whether the case should stay in the Children’s Court or be dealt with at a higher level, in the circuit court, which has tougher sentencing powers.

The teenager had been arrested after gardaí commenced an investigation into a report of a burglary at the home of an elderly woman in Dun Laoghaire in the early hours of Monday.
