Business tourism is expected to be worth more than €21 million this year. It is hoped that the current advertising campaign by Fáilte Ireland will encourage more people to bring meetings, conferences, conventions and incentive travel to Ireland. Since opening in September 2010, the Convention Centre Dublin (below) has hosted more than 430 events.

Lufthansa celebrates 40 years in Dublin

“WE ARE CONFIDENT that this new route has tremendous potential,” said JM Hubrich at the launch of the first Lufthansa air service from Dublin to Frankfurt in April 1972.

The service began with two flights a week on Saturdays and Sundays via Manchester, principally to bring tourists to Ireland.

Forty years later, there are three flights a day, every day of the week, to the international hub of Frankfurt airport, used mainly by business travellers.

Lufthansa has expanded beyond Dublin with a new weekly service from Ireland West Knock Airport to Dusseldorf and summer season flights from Dublin to Munich and Dusseldorf.

Last year, Lufthansa carried almost 300,000 on the Dublin route.
