O’Brien hoping Magician can conjure Ascot win

Dawn Approach, Magician and Toronado are all set to clash at Royal Ascot on Tuesday after a field of nine was declared for the St James's Palace Stakes.

Dawn Approach, winner of the 2000 Guineas, was a doubtful runner after his last-placed finish in the Derby until trainer Jim Bolger stated his intention to run last Wednesday.

Bolger has also declared Leitir Mor, winner of a Group Three at Leopardstown last week.

Magician had been a short-priced favourite for the race following his win in the Irish Guineas but he met with a slight setback last week.

While he is expected to fully recover, Aidan O’Brien has also declared Mars, who has performed creditably in the Guineas and Derby already this season.

George Vancouver is another Ballydoyle representative in the Group One.

Richard Hannon will be hoping the real Toronado turns up after he disappointed many in the Guineas by finishing only fourth. A breathing issue was apparently the reason for that and jockey Richard Hughes has high hopes once again.

Roger Charlton has decided on this race for Dundonnell rather than the Jersey Stakes, while Kevin Ryan’s Guineas runner-up Glory Awaits will take part.

The Mikel Delzangles-trained Mshawish, ridden by Frankie Dettori, completes the field.

Mike De Kock’s Shea Shea will face 18 rivals in the King’s Stand Stakes as he attempts to become the first South African-trained winner at the meeting.

De Kock has trained winners all over the globe, but has yet to break his Ascot duck.

Shea Shea was a very impressive winner at the Dubai World Cup meeting and this has been his aim ever since. He will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon.

He will be joined in the line-up by the Australian raider Shamexpress, trained by Danny O’Brien.

The home team is led by the Clive Cox-trained Reckless Abandon, twice a Group One winner as a juvenile and a fine third on his comeback in the Temple Stakes recently.

Eddie Lynam’s Sole Power finished third in the race last year and he will be partnered by Johnny Murtagh as he goes for glory once again.

Robert Cowell runs Temple Swinner Kingsgate Native, 2011 King’s Stand victor Prohibit and Spirit Quartz, who will be ridden by Joseph O’Brien.

Pearl Secret makes his first appearance of the campaign for David Barron, fellow Yorkshire handler David O’Meara is represented by Move In Time and Doc Hay while John Gosden runs Swiss Spirit.
