MEASURES TO establish a DNA database and tackle noise nuisance are part of the legislative programme for the autumn session of the Oireachtas announced by Government Chief Whip Pat Carey yesterday.

“The Bills that we are indicating will be published in the coming session reflect the work ongoing across Government departments as we continue to lead Ireland through difficult times in the domestic and world economy,” Mr Carey said in a statement.

“Building on our strong output of key legislation in the last Dáil session, I am hopeful that this will continue between now and the new year.

“Many of the Bills listed for publication in the coming Dáil and Seanad session will help to protect communities and citizens. Key pieces of legislation in policy areas such as justice and environment will help to improve the quality of life in Ireland,” Mr Carey said.

Among the items of proposed legislation featured in the list for the coming sessions are the Criminal Justice (Forensic Sampling and Evidence) Bill, which provides for the establishment of a DNA database for criminal investigation purposes.

The Noise Nuisance Bill will allow for a system of fixed payment notices (formerly known as on-the-spot fines). There are also specific measures in relation to burglar alarms which cause a nuisance. New legislation on labour services is also being brought forward.

Mr Carey said: “The coming Dáil session will be a key period in Ireland’s return to economic growth. I am confident that we will have the support of Dáil and Seanad Éireann of these key pieces of legislation. The list of promised legislation today is another strand to our longer-term economic recovery.”
