IT'S A FREE WORLD:ALL GUESTS at Glenribbeen Eco Lodge B&B between Lismore and Cappoquin, Co Waterford are offered either "a go" of a musical instrument, the chance to learn a tune or have an archery lesson.

The three-star B&B, winner of an EU Eco-Award, invites guests to listen to the stream as it flows past the house or use the thatched tower to meditate by the fish pond. Collect your own eggs for breakfast, or pick fruit for a snack and borrow kites, bikes or fishing gear for the day. The owners, Els and Peter, are on hand to offer advice, maps and guidebooks. Single rooms cost from €40 a night in low season while doubles are from €70. The more nights you stay, the cheaper it gets. They also have kennels for dogs.

Catch: a "holistic" B&B with people wandering around playing musical instruments and flying kites might not be everyone's cup of tea.

NOT ENOUGHtourists take advantage of Florida's free discount programmes. In Orlando, it's the Magicard and in the Keys it's the Keys Kash programme.

Sometimes discount cards are not worth the paper they’re printed on but these ones offer substantial discounts and freebies.

The free Magicard gives users a 15 per cent discount off Amtrak fares to Orlando, 50 per cent off a minimum three-night stay at the Best Western, two-for-one ballet tickets, kids eat free deals, extra nights in hotels, free amusement rides, and two for the price of one admission to museums and other attractions. The card is valid for up to six people.

The Keys Kash card offers over 100 deals including free kayaks when you book two nights in certain hotels, discounts on sailings lessons and chartered yachts, and free drinks and tourist attraction passes when you stay in certain hotels.

Catch: black-out dates and other restrictions may apply so check beforehand.
