Ahakista RegattaThe Ahakista Community Association in Co Cork is holding a festival regatta from July 30th to August 4th. The highlight of the weekend will be on Sunday, with gig racing, kayak obstacle racing and a raft race. On Saturday, there will be a guided walk on Sheep's Head and on Monday a fishing competition. The Beast of BallyhouraIf the title of this event doesn't scare you off, then you may be interested in taking part in The Beast of Ballyhoura adventure race over the August bank holiday weekend. The event features a 36-hour non-stop race across counties Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. In mixed teams of four, participants run, bike, kayak (below), abseil, orienteer and shoot. Also on the card is the 80km Blackrock Challenge on Sunday, which includes a 15km hill run and 65km mountain biking, and the Ballyhoura Blitz on Monday, with a 10km hill run and 20km mountain biking. 063-91300, www.ballyhoura beast.com

Tour de BogThis is a 36km family fun cycle from Roundstone to Ballyconneely in Co Galway across the Bog Road and back to Roundstone on Thursday, August 9th. Most of the route is on the R341, with a 10km section between Ballinaboy and Toombeola. Medals are awarded for the most colourful dress, best hat, and craziest-looking bike.
