Gibbons tees off with Tetrarch

Bernard Gibbons, the long-serving former manager of Powerscourt Golf Club, who retired from the club last month after 18 years, is back out of retirement already. Those golf types clearly get itchy feet very quickly. It must be the fine weather.

Gibbons has joined Tetrarch Capital, the investment company and hotel owner that was once known as Brehon Capital, before one of its founders left and took the name with him. Its assets include the swanky Marker hotel near the Grand Canal theatre.

Among Tetrarch's portfolio are three hotels with associated golf courses – Mount Juliet in Kilkenny, Mount Wolseley in Carlow and and Citywest in west Dublin. Tetrarch also owns Powerscourt hotel but it does not own the nearby golf club, although the two co-operate with each other.

Tetrarch says the three courses will not be run by Gibbons as a group, but there are clear opportunities for cost savings and synergies.

For a recently retired chap, Gibbons seems awfully fired up for action: “I am delighted to be joining the Tetrarch Capital team to develop and enhance the golf experience and performance at Mount Juliet, Mount Wolseley and Citywest. My immediate priority is to oversee the development of our new club house at Mount Juliet and the significant investment Tetrarch is making.”

Tetrarch also says it may look at developing a “small number” of houses around Mount Juliet, if market conditions are right.

The reborn boom appears to be getting boomier.
